While there is no maximum of how much concrete you remove with a grinder, most projects don't require more than one-half of an inch of removal. A one-half inch of concrete removal with a grinder can take six or more passes.
If you find yourself needing to remove more concrete in a shorter amount of time, perhaps a concrete scarifier is more suitable for your needs. You can always use both tools to first remove the concrete and then grind it to your desired finish.
Best Results of Concrete Grinding
Despite their versatility, grinders generally aren't designed for aggressive profiling jobs, and there are certain coatings a traditional grinder just can't remove. They are most effective at removing thin coatings and paints or for cleaning and lightly abrading floor surfaces.
When deciding between tungsten carbide and diamond attachments for coating removal, the main factors to consider are the material type and thickness and the strength of the mechanical bond to the surface. One manufacturer offers this tip: If the material to be removed can be cut with a knife, use tungsten carbide. Diamond segments are more suitable for thinner coatings no greater than 1/16 inch.
When using diamond tooling, it's important to choose the right bond hardness of the matrix (the material that holds the diamond segments) to achieve greater efficiency and to maximize tool life. In general, use a hard bond when grinding soft materials and a soft bond for hard materials. Softer materials wear away the diamonds more quickly.
The weight of walk-behind grinders can make a difference in grinding performance. Heavier units permit more aggressive grinding because they place more weight on the discs, allowing them to make better contact with the surface. Ballast weights can be added to some machines for tackling more difficult material removal jobs.
Grinders and scarifiers are excellent pieces of equipment, but the best one to use depends on the type of project you need to complete.
Grinders are a great option for projects requiring more precision because they operate less aggressively than scarifiers by applying less force. Timing is another factor to consider before choosing between a grinder and a scarifier. You can typically complete larger projects faster with a scarifier. This is because a grinder's small cutting tools may take multiple movements to prepare a surface, depending on the state of the surface before starting a project. While grinders are excellent for projects requiring you to remove shallow depths of concrete, scarifiers can help you remove more concrete in a short amount of time.
Because scarifiers can work more efficiently for larger projects, they can also help you save money if you need to remove a large amount of concrete. Choosing a scarifier for large projects can reduce your operating costs by allowing you to remove concrete efficiently.
In some cases, it may be best to use both a scarifier and a grinder if you have a large project that requires a polished finish. You can use a scarifier to remove most of the surface's concrete and then use a grinder to smooth the surface.
If your diamonds begin to glaze and become ineffective when you're working on a hard, dry surface - use silica sand as a secondary abrasive to keep them sharp.
If you're removing tacky tile glue or other adhesives - add sand to the surface. Adding sand will ball up the material to make it easier to remove.
Consider adding weight to your dual-disc grinder if the grinding process is taking too long. The more weight, the more aggressive the grinder will be. But don't go overboard; adding too much weight can bog down the motor and damage the machine.
